ESC goes Nordic: Feedback from our Danish relatives

Date: 04 Jun 2007
Prof. R. Ferrari, FESC

President-Elect and ESC presence warmly welcomed

The presence of Prof. Roberto Ferrari, FESC, at the recent annual meeting of the Danish Cardiac Society was very much appreciated by both delegates and the national society leadership.

In his speech to the over 300 delegates Ferrari underlined the great importance of national societies as the “roots” of the ESC tree. He actively encouraged an even closer collaboration between the national and European working groups and he made a call for more young talents to join ESC activities.

Describing the ESC as one big family or a tree, Ferrari found different ways of capturing delegates’ attention, triggering a discussion about topics like Guidelines or how to best become actively involved in the society’s life.

Focus on European Collaboration

The ESC and European collaboration were generally high on the agenda of this meeting with:

  • A special session on the ESC, held on Friday 01 June under the leadership of Danish Cardiac Society appointed ESC Liaison Person, Prof. Lars Hvilsted Rasmussen, FESC, from Denmark and of ESC Board Member Prof. Steen Dalby Kristensen, FESC.
  • An ESC Guidelines session, presented by past ESC Vice-President and Board Secretary Kristian Thygesen, FESC, to present the guidelines on stable angina and global MI definition
  • Awarding of an honorary membership to Prof. Otto Smiseth, FESC (Norway), ESC Board Member from 2002 to 2006 and past Secretary of the ESC Board who is involved in various key activities of the European Society of Cardiology
  • An ESC Information Stand, right outside the main session room, where members could ask questions and receive information on membership benefits as well as latest ESC events and publications.

ESC Board Member Steen Dalby Kristensen, FESC, encouraged the Danish Society to join the European Heart Health Charter, he also recommended that Denmark might want to consider adopting more ESC Guidelines, instead of creating their own. This was very much supported by the President-Elect of the Danish Cardiac Society.

There is no doubt that Europe and the collaboration within the ESC family was a priority at this meeting, for both leadership and delegates, and that the trend will continue beyond this one key meeting.

Thank you to Professors Hvilsted Rasmussen, FESC, Dalby Kristensen, FESC, to Danish Society President Hansen and to ESC President-Elect Prof. Roberto Ferrari, FESC.
