The Board of the European Society of Cardiology decided to create the Nurse Fellowship of the European Society of Cardiology (NFESC) in 1999. This decision was taken in order to give formal recognition to those nurses who acquired a number of years of experience in the field of cardiac care and who have distinguished themselves individually in clinical practice, education, research, organisational or professional aspects of cardiac nursing.
The Nurse Fellowship of the ESC provides the Society with a team of nurses whose responsibilities are to uphold and develop the professional contribution of nursing to cardiac care throughout Europe, particularly by means of the greater integration and collaboration of the activities of the various National Nurses' Societies.
Up to date, 67 nurses have been recognised as outstanding nurses in the field of cardiac care.

Emeritus Nurse Fellow of the ESC
The status of Emeritus Nurse Fellows will be granted to Nurse Fellows who inform the National Societies and Membership Services Department about his/her retirement.
