ESC Awards 2003

Print version

Introduction

The European Society of Cardiology is pleased to recognise the achievements of colleagues who, for their dedication and contribution to cardiology, will receive awards at the occasion of the Annual Congress 2003 in Vienna.

We are also pleased to congratulate all those who have been newly elected as Fellows or Nurse Fellows of the ESC, or who have qualified for the Diploma of European Cardiologist.

This year, the ESC is delighted to award the ESC Gold Medal to Professor Liv Hatle, to be presented during the Opening Ceremony, in recognition of her outstanding contribution over the course of her career to the development of cardiology, and in particular, the development and application of ultrasound imaging in cardiology.

The four lecturers on clinical cardiology (Amadeo Betriu and Jos Roelandt), population sciences (Salim Yusuf) and on basic science (Paul Vanhoutte) will be awarded the ESC Silver Medal.

During the Awards Ceremony, a variety of distinguished persons will all be presented, including the Young Investigators Awards, Moderated Poster Prizes, Training Fellowships, Fellows, Nurse Fellows, and Diplomas of European Cardiologist. The ESC is also grateful to the Working Group on Heart Failure and the Working Group on Interventional Cardiology and Coronary Pathophysiology for awarding training fellowships. The newly elected training fellows will be congratulated during the Ceremony.

Furthermore, the ESC would also like to acknowledge the contribution of Sanofi-Synthelabo and Bristol-Myers Squibb, who have created the REACH Award. This award was established to recognise research fellows with innovative proposals for the improved clinical management of atherothrombosis.

The European Society of Cardiology can be proud of the achievements of all these colleagues, and it is my pleasure to congratulate the awardees most heartily on their respective awards.

JEAN-PIERRE BASSAND, F.E.S.C.
PRESIDENT, EUROPEAN SOCIETY OF CARDIOLOGY
