Protocol Summary

This survey will provide a systematic overview of the diagnosis and management of patients with diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance, who are referred to cardiologists for assessment and treatment of coronary artery disease. The management strategies applied to patients with diabetes and prediabetic state will be compared with their counterparts with normal glucose tolerance. Furthermore the study will enable comparison of the outcomes in the short-term (on hospital discharge) and after one year in relation to the metabolic state and the treatment applied.

Objectives of the survey:

  • In the Euro Heart Survey on Diabetes and the Heart, the following issues have been addressed:
  • Assess the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance in adult patients with coronary artery disease (newly or previously established, acute or stable, with or without heart failure).
  • Verify the applicability of the outcomes of major clinical trials in this patient population.
  • Investigate clinical practice in the form of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in patient management.
  • Identify the opportunities to improve patient management by development of guidelines and their implementation
