Discover Copenhagen

EUROECHO 2010

Welcome to Copenhagen, Scandinavia’s most fantastic city and the world’s oldest monarchy, where culture, art and cuisine unite. The city consists of a multitude of areas, each with its own charm, history and distinctive character. What better a city to host you during EUROECHO!

Copenhagen's Top 10

1- Little Mermaid

Hans Christian Andersen wrote a fairy tale about her, Disney produced a film, and Copenhagen maintains a statue in her honour. The Little Mermaid continues to be the most popular tourist attraction in Denmark and one of the most photographed statues in the world.

2- Amalienborg Castle

Amalienborg is a real royal castle although it doesn't have towers and spires. This is where the Queen lives during the winter season and it is also the venue of the famous balcony scenes, which take place whenever the royal family seizes the occasion to greet the people. Even though the castle is primarily the residence of the royal couple, visitors have the chance to experience some of the royal chambers that are not in daily use.

3- National Gallery

The Danish national gallery, is the only place in Denmark, which features 700 years of Western art and cultural history under one roof. Consequently a visit to the museum means an artistic encounter between classical, modern and contemporary art, just as the museum building in itself represents a fusion of new and old.

4- Canal Tours

A tour on the old canals is one of the biggest tourist attractions and an experience you should not miss. The boats take you through all parts of the old city and pass many of the most famous sights.

5- Kronborg Castle

Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, at the seaward approach to the sound, Øresund, is one of northern Europe's most important Renaissance castles. Known all over the world from Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is also the most famous castle in Denmark and is visited each year by about 200,000 Danes and tourists.

6- Tivoli Garden

Tivoli is one of the oldest amusement parks of the world and the park consequently exudes tradition and history. The fairytale garden is to this day a vibrant meeting place, where young concert goers, families with children, business men lunching and elderly couples strolling all gather in the picturesque, elegant and atmospheric garden.

7- National Museum

At the National Museum children as well as adults can dive into the history of the Danish kingdom and you can expect a vibrant historical depiction through light, sound and sight in the palace, which was originally built for King Frederik V in 1746.

8- Strøget Street

Copenhagen's largest shopping area is centered around Strøget in the heart of the city. Strøget is the world's longest pedestrian street with a wealth of shops, from budget-friendly chains to some of the world's most expensive brands. The stretch was originally called Routen, and it was not before 1962 and in the years after it was converted to a pedestrian street.

9- Round Tower

Rundetaarn, or the round tower, is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe and stars have been watched here since 1642. At the time when Christian the IV built the tower Denmark was quite famous for its astronomical achievements thanks to the astronomer Tycho Brahe. Today it has been awhile since the scientists left the telescope, but the observatory is still frequently used by amateur astronomers and the many visitors of the tower.

10- Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Lousiana Museum of Modern Art is undoubtedly the best attempt at a Danish MOMA you will find. In beautiful surroundings approximately 40 kilometres north of Copenhagen you can experience renowned, international artists, when Lousiana's changing exhibitions bring world class art to the forefront of the Danish art scene.
