These guidelines include clinical data, diagnostic procedures and therapeutic approaches. Echocardiography has become the initial diagnostic technique for multiple aspects of the disease and the subsequent approach to treatment.
In therapeutic terms, valvular surgical replacement is still the most frequent intervention
Medical treatment of VHD has not demonstrated any effect on mortality or progression of the disease. In therapeutic terms, valvular surgical replacement is still the most frequent intervention; however, conservative techniques are the choice whenever feasible. It is recommended to practice valve-sparing techniques; good results have been obtained approaching the mitral valve, focus is moving to the aorta, and new percutaneous techniques are being developed.
Guidelines: a useful tool
VHD remains a common disease in Europe and cardiologists must diagnose, manage and choose the best therapy. The new guidelines on VHD are well written and are an interesting review of the current situation, as well as a useful tool to diagnose and manage such patients.
