Four new guidelines were produced during 2011 and presented to the membership during the 2011 guidelines overview session.
The first presentation was jointly performed by Dr. Tendera (Poland) and Dr. Aboyans (France) who chaired the guideline on "diagnosis and treatment of peripheral artery diseases". For the first time, the ESC issued guidelines on this topic, documenting the atherosclerotic changes in the different vessel beds. The guideline includes diagnostic approaches and therapeutic options, and required an entire team of cardiologists, vascular surgeons, neurologists and angiologists for its production.

The second presentation concerned the new guideline on "management of acute coronary syndromes in patients presenting without persistent ST-segment elevation", chaired and presented by Dr. Hamm from Germany and Dr. Bassand from France. All the novel recommendations on diagnostical procedures, evaluation algorithms and therapeutic strategies (anticoagulation, invasive and conservative management) were discussed.

The third presentation concerned "the management of cardiovascular diseases during pregnancy". This guideline was headed and presented by Dr. Regitz-Zagrosek from Germany. She presented the key issues on this guideline and also pointed out that this was the first time a guideline on this topic was issued. She also stressed that large randomized trials were lacking and that most recommendations relied on expert opinions. Still, her team has provided comprehensive guidance for the pre-pregnancy counselling of women with heart disease and management of any cardiovascular disease during their pregnancy and delivery, including the post-partum phase.

The last presentation was jointly performed by Dr. Reiner (representing the ESC) and Dr. Catapano (representing the EAS), and concerned the topic of "management of dyslipidaemias". The guideline provided specific recommendations on the assessment and management of the different dyslipidaemias. In conclusion, 4 new guidelines in clinically relevant areas were presented, with clear clinical implications and providing guidance for the daily management of patients with cardiovascular diseases.
