Young Investigator Awards 

The ESC Congress 2009 winners

Awards have been given to five young investigators whose abstracts have been selected as the best of the best in five categories: basic science, clinical science, thrombosis, population sciences and coronary pathophysiology.

Young investigators are defined as “under 35”, and their work has been judged by an expert panel for originality, scientific content and presentation.

Here are the winners for 2009:

Sossalla Basic Science : S SOSSALLA (Goettingen, DE)
Atrial fibrillation leads to electrical remodelling of
Na currents. Role of INa inhibition by ranolazine
on arrhythmias and contractility.




JenkinsClinical Science : C JENKINS (Brisbane, AU)
Association of outcome with left ventricular
parameters measured by two- and three-
dimensional echocardiography.




MoceriThrombosis : P MOCERI (Nice, FR)
Strong decrease of the clopidogrel antiplatelet
effect with  esomeprazole, but not with ranitidine
and recovering of the antiplatelet effect by doubling
the dosage of clopidogrel.



BaronePopulation Sciences : F BARONE ADESI (Turin, IT)
Italian smoking regulation decreased hospital admissions
for acute coronary events:effect modification by age and
day of the week.




ChatzizisisCoronary Pathophysiology and microcirculation
(Working Group award) : Y CHATZIZISIS (Boston, US)
Augmented expression of extracellular matrix-degrading
enzymes by low Endothelial Shear Stress (ESS) promotes
the formation of coronary atheromata with thin fibrous caps.




Young Investigators and Moderated Poster Awards
The winners of this year’s Young Investigators and Moderated Poster awards received their certificates at a joint ceremony on Sept.2, 2009. The awards were presented by Professor Fausto Pinto, Chairman of the Congress Programme Committee.
