Date: 02 Sep 2009
ESC Congress 2009 - General Assembly

  • Delegates heard from Jose Luis Zamorano Gomez, Secretary/Treasurer of the ESC, that the Society’s finances were in safe hands. Gerard Fulconis, Chairperson of the Audit Committee, pictured above, reported that the ESC accounts for 2008-2009 were in order.
  • The three Vice–Presidents of the ESC, Steen Dalby Kristensen, Alan Fraser and Raffaele De Caterina, reported on activities relating to the ESC Associations, Councils, Working Groups, 52 National Cardiac Societies and Affiliated Members.
  • The application of the Kosovo Society to become an ESC National Society was accepted. The Brazilian, Chilean, Uruguayan, Iraqi, Jordanian and Saudi National Cardiac Societies were accepted as Affiliate Societies of the ESC.
  • In 2009, 187 new fellows and two new nurse fellows were nominated by the Board.
  • Hugo Madeira was voted on to the Audit Committee.
  • Steen Dalby Kristensen reported on a new ESC initiative that will give the annual congresses of National Cardiology Societies the opportunity to host joint scientific sessions with the ESC. Three ESC members (including two speakers and a chairman), he said, will be available to attend National Society meetings with the goal of increasing scientific exchange. Already, 37 of 52 National Societies have responded positively; the first topics on the agenda will be acute coronary syndrome and heart failure.
