Our ambition is to provide the best of science and education for the assembled cardiologists, internists, scientists, nurses and other health professionals concerned with preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).
The theme of the congress is CVD and ageing, a problem of particular relevance as cardiovascular diseases increase exponentially with age. A number of dedicated sessions will address the issue and analyse the treatment gap. We look at how we can mitigate the epidemic of CVD by investing more in prevention and early detection.
Our programme will cover all aspects of cardiology from bench to bedside, including Hot Line Sessions, Clinical Trial Updates and FOCUS and Highlight sessions. Two Practice Guidelines sessions and five Euro Heart Surveys sessions will focus on the latest ESC guidelines and on surveys across ESC countries.
During six “meet the experts” lunchtime sessions on Sunday, practical cases will be discussed to provide guidance in everyday practice. We have also introduced Sunday late evening “read with the experts” sessions on new cardiac imaging techniques, including computer-assisted tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.
The WHF’s Science Initiatives will support its emphasis on preventing and controlling heart disease and stroke in low- and middleincome countries. These sessions will touch on the global health agenda, women and heart disease, community and policy initiatives, Chagas disease and rheumatic fever/rheumatic heart disease (Lima room).
Another innovation is the “Association Corner,” where, on Monday, the four ESC Associations will each organise 90- minute sessions to highlight the major messages of their subspecialty annual meeting or activities.
We received a record 10,594 abstract submissions from 94 countries, 24% from Africa, the Americas and Asia. We would like to thank the 714 graders who selected 3,917 abstracts for their important scientific contribution. The best will be presented during the Young Investigators competition on Sunday. The winners will be recognised during the Award ceremony.
