For your Heart's Sake

Date: 02 Sep 2006

Get on your bike and ride!

That’s the message coming loud and clear from the “For Your Heart’s Sake” (FYHS) team, which is responsible for the public awareness initiative that always runs at the beginning of each congress.

An array of healthy heart events (including bicycle hire) are being staged today (Saturday 2 September) from 10.00 until 20.00, which means there’s still plenty of time to get down to the Placa Catalunya in the heart of the city and see what all the fuss is about.

Eva Swahn, Past President of the Swedish Society
of Cardiology, Valentin Fuster, WHF President and
Joan Clos I Matheu, Mayor of Barcelona at
yesterday's “For Your Heart's Sake 2006”.

Events kicked off yesterday (1 September) with healthy heart cook and taste demonstrations, advice on how to stop smoking, exercise routine demonstrations, a live band and information on general healthy heart living.

FYHS project leader, Stephanie Brodin, said: “This event is concerned with informing everyone about how to have a healthy heart. There is no point in academics and cardiologists coming to Barcelona and sharing their expertise just with each other – we need to translate their hard work into a message we can easily give to the very people we are all trying to help.”

The Spanish version of HeartScore is also being unveiled during FYHS. HeartScore is an electronic, interactive version of the SCORE (Systemic Coronary Risk Evaluation) risk charts of the European Guidelines on coronary vascular disease prevention. The Spanish version will be the fourth country-specific one to be available, in addition to the two European versions (one for European countries considered low-risk and one for all others).

Stephanie said: “We expect some 2,000 participants to go through the risk assessment station, where they will have their blood pressure taken and a blood test. This information will then be fed into HeartScore and simple advice, based on the findings, can be given. It’s always a popular and very practical session.”

FYHS partners include the ESC, WHF, Spanish Society of Cardiology, Spanish Heart Foundation, the City of Barcelona, Barcelona Convention Bureau, AstraZeneca and Siemens.
