| Trade, shipping and international contacts have distinguished Gothenburg ever since the city was founded in 1621 by Gustav II Adolf. It was built by Dutchmen, and in the 17th century the official languages were Dutch, German, Swedish and English.
Modern-day Gothenburg with its wide boulevards, parks and stone houses was built around the end of the 19th century.

Gothenburg has a rich music life—the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is the best known when it comes to classical music. Gothenburg also was the birthplace of the Swedish composer Kurt Atterberg.
Bands like The Soundtrack of Our Lives and Ace of Base are well known pop representatives of the city.
The Gothenburg Opera house was inaugurated in 1994, and is an architectural landmark situated right next to the Göta älv river.

Its closeness to the sea makes Gothenburg special. The coast and islands are renowned for their natural beauty and picturesque habitation. A half-hour tram ride and a boat onwards will take you straight out to the southern archipelago.
There are around thirty islands of various sizes, from larger islands with houses and places to fish, to small deserted islets and skerries offering wonderful bathing, either from sandy beaches or smooth rock shores
