Guidelines have been published both in Europe and US supporting the key role of exercise training as a real therapeutic option in HF, with practical description of the training modality, duration, inclusion and exclusion criteria.
However, the implementation is far slower for this than for treatments such as drugs and implantable devices - both of which have a natural large industry lobby behind them.
Teaching objectives of the lecture:
Several unsolved issues need to be investigated:
- the effect of exercise training in real world HF population, ie
- aging
- mainly women
- co-morbidities
- with electrical devices such as ICD or CRT
- how to improve adherence and compliance on the long term
- how to implement in the different clinical European settings
Take home messages:
- The key role of exercise conditioning in prognosis of heart failure
- The necessity to promote this concept among the heart specialists and their patients
- The development of novel means to increase patients' adherence to prescribed exercise and healthier life habits in clinical practice.
