Prognostication is a crucial point in the follow up of heart failure patients. Prognostic is depending of many different aspects of the disease and are mainly based in clinical practice on physician experience and local possibilities (clinical examination, Echocardiography, VO², 6 minute walk test,...)
Natriuretic peptides have proved their usefulness to help clinicians to diagnose heart failure in dyspneic patients. Actually, many studies from litterature support NP use for prognostication in acute and chronic heart failure.
However, NP dosage must be integrated in a global approach including results from clinical examination and data from the echocardiography.
Teaching objective of the lecture:
To integrate natriuretic peptides in a routine prognostication analysis in heart failure patients.
Take home messages:
- NP are useful prognosticating markers in every day practice
- NP measurements have to be analysed in relation to clinical examination and other parameters like echo and VO²
