Remote home monitoring is on the verge of becoming a routine option in the management of heart failure patients. Novel diagnostic technology will provide additional tools for monitoring of relevant physiological parameters. Future research and development in the field will aim at improving the diagnostic performance of remote monitoring strategies and their integration into everyday office work flow. As far as implantable electrical devices are involved, remote patient monitoring requires a close collaboration between clinicians from different specialities. The clinical effectiveness of remote home monitoring still remains to be established in controlled outcome trials.

Teaching objective of the lecture:

To give a summary of monitoring technology that may be used in future clinical practice.
To better understand the potential impact remote monitoring may have on future patient management in heart failure.

Take home messages:

  • Remote monitoring will change the mode of future heart failure patient management
  • Organizational changes are required to integrate remote monitoring technology into routine office work flow
  • A multi modal approach may improve the diagnostic accuracy and yield of remote monitoring
