Welcome Address

Heart failure is one of the most challenging medical conditions both for basic research and clinical practice...

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is with enthusiasm that we announce the Heart Failure Congress 2009, which will take place in the exceptional setting of Nice, France.  Heart Failure 2009 will be held jointly with the Annual Congress of the European Section of the International Society for Heart Research.

Heart failure is one of the most challenging medical conditions both for basic research and clinical practice and this meeting will provide comprehensive state-of-the-art views on the major aspects of heart failure including the most recent advances in basic cardiovascular sciences, epidemiology, prognosis and medical/surgical management. Improved treatment of most cardiovascular diseases and increased longevity means we are seeing an exponential growth in the number of patients presenting with this syndrome.  Its high prevalence and poor prognosis result in a major burden on health care resources.

The mission of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology (HFA of the ESC) is “to improve quality of life and longevity, through better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart failure, including the establishment of networks for its management, education and research”.

Our annual congress is our flagship and is the platform that highlights all of our activities.  It gathers together all of the players working in the field of heart failure and provides the opportunity to share knowledge and expertise on an international level.

An important part of our programme in Nice is basic science. We will present exciting sessions focusing on the translational aspect of basic science, but also highly specific basic science research, co-organised by the European Section of the International Society of Heart Research and the Basic Science Section of the HFA.

This is THE congress to attend for anybody interested in the diverse aspects of heart failure research or management.  Cardiologists, internists, general physicians, basic scientists, cardiac nurses, primary care physicians, industry affiliates and others, will share new insights, improve their knowledge and clinical practice and be brought up to date on the most important current issues.

We warmly invite you to participate in this unique opportunity to network, exchange knowledge and get updated on the latest developments in our field.  Come and share in the excitement of a challenging scientific programme, as well as the beauty and culture of the Côte d’Azur.

Yours sincerely,

  • Prof. John McMurray, President, Heart Failure Association of the ESC
  • Prof. Sian Harding, President, European Section of the International Society for Heart Research
  • Prof. Kenneth Dickstein, Scientific Committee Chairperson, Past President, Heart Failure Association of the ESC
  • Prof. Michel Komajda, Scientific Committee Co-Chairperson
