Welcome Address

This year EUROECHO will be entering in its second decade. Echocardiography has changed so much over the past 10 years with exciting new technologies such as contrast, real-time three-dimensional echocardiography and deformation imaging that has set new challenges amongst increased competition from other imaging modalities. Echocardiography remains and will remain the most popular and clinically important imaging modality. We warmly welcome you to EUROECHO 2007, the 11th consecutive EUROECHO meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, from 5th- 8th December 2007.

EUROECHO remains the major educational and research meeting in cardiovascular ultrasound in Europe. EUROECHO has grown from strength to strength over the years to become the most important scientific gathering in echocardiography attracting participants from around the world.

As every year, there will be two main special themes at EUROECHO 2007 in which four sessions in one day will be devoted to contrast echocardiography and four other sessions on the role of echocardiography in arrhythmias, jointly organised with the Heart Rhythm Association. There will be digital interactive cases (DICE) organised by colleagues from a number of countries and other societies. New this year is the live sessions on contrast, cardiac resynchronisation and device closures.

The academic standards and scope of research presentations and discussion at EUROECHO 2007 will be higher than ever with over 1200 abstracts to be presented. Finally, there will be a large industry exhibition and a record number of satellite sessions.

I wish to personally welcome you in Lisbon this year and hope that you will also have the opportunity to sample the unique architecture, ambience and hospitality of this wonderful city.

Professor Petros Nihoyannopoulos
President, European Association of Echocardiography
