Expenditure on health varies greatly throughout Europe. In those countries where expenditure is greater, there is substantial investment in devices or procedures; less in simple measures of prevention. Overall there is no progress in the cessation of smoking, in obesity and there is an increase in diabetes. So what is really effective and how could the European Society of Cardiology contribute to revert the trends? The solutions proposed would be to invest in prevention; to create alliances with sister societies, GPs and nurses for the management of chronic diseases; and homogenise education in cardiology. Professor Komajda presented the ESC* Road Map up to 2012:
