Global Cardiovascular Disease Prevention: A Call to Action for Nursing

Topics: Cardiovascular Nursing
Date: 05 Aug 2011
Cardiovascular disease is responsible for a third of deaths worldwide. Figures will increase as risk factors for CVD are on the rise. This Consensus Document describes the current situation and the need for action to reduce risk factors. It provides a comprehensive approach to the problem and proposes measures, supported by evidence, to change current trends.

The document covers the following aspects:

  • the background for the need of global cardiovascular prevention
  • why community based initiatives are necessary
  • determinants of patients' adherence to prevention guidelines
  • special needs of developing countries
  • providing incentives for healthy behaviour
  • evidence from epidemiological studies
  • nurse-directed case management
  • education and skills to prepare nurses for roles in leadership

It is coauthored by:
  • Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association (PCNA)
  • ESC Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions (CCNAP)
  • Council on Cardiovascular Nursing of the American Heart Association
and endorsed by the World Heart Federation.

The Consensus Document was distributed free of charge to CCNAP members at the CCNAP General Assembly 2011 and on the ESC Stand at the ESC Congress 2011.
