Why a new ESC journal in the field of Acute Cardiovascular Care?

Most patients admitted to ICCUs and CCUs suffer from acute coronary syndromes, cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, cardiac arrhythmias and acute heart failure – These are major life-threatening conditions requiring the coordination of multi-disciplinary team to deliver state of the art therapies to improve the outcome in these patients.

Acute Cardiac Care is an area of cardiology that is becoming increasingly recognised as a subspecialty in its own.
Studies show that the number of papers published in the acute cardiac care field is substantial, continuously growing and mostly coming from European authors. There is a need for a European journal in this field.

What is this journal all about?

The EHJ-ACVC journal will offer a unique integrative approach combining the expertise of the different subspecialties of cardiology, emergency and intensive care medicine in the management of patients with acute cardiovascular syndromes.

The journal will include articles which discuss interdisciplinary daily clinical practice, with space also dedicated to educational materials such as reviews, clinical case discussions, practical tips & tricks, how-to articles.

Who is the journal for?

Reading through the journal, cardiologists and all other healthcare professionals working in the field of acute cardiac care - emergentists, intensivists, nurses, anaesthetists, physicians - can access continuous update that may help them to improve the quality of care and the outcome of patients with acute cardiovascular diseases.

How will it succeed?

The editorial board of the journal gathers peer reviewers from all over Europe. Due to their expertise, the European Heart Journal will publish the highest quality material, both clinical and scientific, on all aspects of acute cardiac care such as acute coronary syndromes, cardiogenic shock, cardiac arrest, cardiac arrhythmias and acute heart failure.

When will it be available?
The first issue - to be published in Spring 2012 - will be a landmark publication, and one which includes research from some of the most prominent research groups in our field. It will be widely distributed online and in print.

Furthermore, free online access will be offered for the first two years of publication and the first year of subscription (print version) will be offered to those who are members of the ESC Working Group on Acute Cardiac Care at the launch date.
