The surgeons organised their dedicated meeting “Surgeons meet the cardiologists” for the second consecutive year at the EuroPCR conference in Barcelona. Many cardiac surgeons attended and this produced stimulating discussions. Prof. Patrick Nataf and his team at Bichat hospital in Paris made a live demonstration of reconstruction of the coronary tree of a triple vessel disease patient via pure internal mammary artery by-pass grafting. The attendees (both cardiologists and surgeons) agreed that with the well documented long term patency of the internal mammary artery, improvement of outcome and potential reduction in mortality rate associated with all arterial CABG was to be expected. Later on, the surgical sessions confirmed that patients with multi-vessel disease and insulin-dependent diabetes treated with surgery demonstrated a superior life expectancy compared to those who underwent PCI. The importance of combined medico-surgical staffs to discuss the most appropriate management of patients with coronary artery disease and significant co-morbidities was emphasized. The results of numerous randomized trials comparing surgery and PCI are awaited; in the meanwhile, the Syntax score establishing the severity of coronary lesions was described allowing a better identification of patients likely to benefit the most from either technique. Vascular surgeons were treated to a furry of excellent presentations on peripheral arterial disease management. We are currently preparing next year’s contribution and we hope to integrate the feedback from attendees and any new ideas you might wish to submit. Our motto remains “Surgeons are the cardiologists first and foremost interlocutors”.See you in May 2008 in Barcelona for another surgical chapter of the EuroPCR.
