The ESC Working Group on Thrombosis organises Eurothrombosis each year. Once every two years the event is called Eurothrombosis Science, and the other year it is Eurothrombosis Summit, which mainly deals with clinical thrombosis.
This year, the Eurothrombosis Summit 2007 was organised in Nijmegen (NL) from 5 to 6 October and was attended by 200 cardiologists, mainly members of the Working Group on Thrombosis.
The topics included reperfusion therapy for STEMI, atrial fibrillation and cardiac embolism and mechanisms of atherothrombotic disease. The guidelines on STEMI, non ST- elevation acute coronary syndromes, PCI and atrial fibrillation were also updated. Both the American and European guidelines were highlighted, as were their differences. Finally, secondary prevention of coronary artery disease with antithrombotic agents was discussed.
A special place was given to stroke treatment as well as diabetes. There were two satellite symposia: one regarding dual antiplatelet therapy in acute coronary syndromes and one on modern anticoagulation in acute coronary syndromes.
The meeting was closed by a debate session on prehospital thrombolysis, and on the use of glycoprotein IIB/IIIA blockers in coronary intervention.
The next meeting will be Eurothrombosis Science 2008, to be held in December 2008 in Barcelona, and the next Eurothrombosis Summit will be held in Oslo in 2009.
