EHRA/AFNET Atrial Fibrillation Consensus Conferences

The Third Joint Consensus Conference of the German Atrial Fibrillation Network (AFNET) and the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) 7-10 November 2010, European Heart House, France

The Joint Consensus Conference was co-organised by

Paulus Kirchhof

A John Camm

Günter Breithardt

Gregory Y H Lip

Motivated by a clear need to discuss the implementation of novel multimodality therapeutic options for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) patients, the conference gathered experts from 7-10 November 2010 at the European Heart House, Sophia Antipolis, France with the aim of producing a position paper on Stroke prevention, thromboembolic risk assessment, modification of risk factors, and rhythm control to reduce cardiovascular complications in Atrial Fibrillation

During the conference, the invitees including 38 well know scientits in the field of Arrhythmia and 19 representatives from the industries, took a fresh look at emerging data on detection of “silent” AF and patterns of AF recurrence as well as on new imaging information on atrial disease and their relation to stroke and death.

The attendees also discussed whether patients with different “types” of AF require different therapy and whether this could be a starting point for individualized AF management. This discussion included potential special needs for patients with AF who also suffer from heart failure, coronary artery disease, or valvular heart disease.

In addition to participants from 14 European Countries, several selected “high-profile” scientists from America were also present. Industry participants came from AGA, Astra Zeneca, Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Daiichi Sankyo, Medtronic, MSD, Pfizer, Sanofi Aventis, and St. Jude Medical.

On the occasion of the conference, The International Society for Holter and Noninvasive Electrocardiology (ISHNE) organised the interviews of some experts in the field of Atrial Fibrillation.

Second Joint AFNET/EHRA Consensus Conference on Research Perspectives for Diagnosis and Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation.

The 2nd AFNET/EHRA consensus conference on “Research Perspectives in Atrial Fibrillation” gathered over 70 participants – invited scientists and participants from industry – in the European Heart House in Sophia Antipolis, France, on 27-28 October. The conference was funded by AFNET and EHRA and organised by Günter Breithardt, John Camm, Harry Crijns, and Paulus Kirchhof. Experts discussed recent developments concerning anticoagulation, antiarrhythmic drug treatment, surgical and catheter ablation, ECG monitoring, management of risk factors for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and AF-related complications, pathophysiological factors that cause the arrhythmias, and novel therapeutic goals. The proceedings of the conference will be published in a position paper next year.

In 2007 - First AFNET/EHRA consensus statement – Outcome parameters for trials in AF

We have made available two recently published consensus statements from AFNET and EHRA and accompanying explanatory slides made by Günter Breithardt for a presentation at the 2007 annual ESC Congress in Vienna.

These documents summarize the results of a consensus conference held at the European Heart House in Sophia Antipolis in January 2007. The need for such a conference was expressed originally within the AFNET, where controlled clinical trials were planned and designed for AF patients. It was recognised that there was an insufficiency of accepted “end points” (or outcome parameters) for such trials. This matter is complicated by the multifaceted effects of the arrhythmia that can range from acute heart failure, death, or stroke in some patients to long, truly asymptomatic arrhythmia episodes in others.
Günter Breithardt played an instrumental role by suggesting a comprehensive AFNET-EHRA consensus conference on outcome parameters in atrial fibrillation trials. EHRA supported this initiative, raising it to an international level. Both during the conference and the writing process, the writing group got extensive help from the conference participants, all of whom are mentioned in the appendix of the documents.

The AFNET/EHRA joint writing group hope that the documents will provide useful guidance for the design and interpretation of trials in AF. It aims to guide clinical trial groups, but also to help physicians in making educated, evidence-based decisions for the treatment of patients with AF.
