Welcome to the European Society of Cardiology. Our mission: to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in Europe

Letter from the President - January 2011

European Heart Rhythm Association

Date: 03 Jan 2011
Prof. P. Vardas, EHRA President   Dear Colleagues,

A new calendar year is to be completed soon in the history of our Association.
It has already been seven years since EHRA was brought to action. Seven years is indeed a short period to claim and boast of age-long distinctions as an institute.

Nevertheless, the fact that, during these seven years, EHRA has been organized quickly, has set its priorities in order of precedence, pushed on with the recruitment of executives, got existing projects under way and can now present an important number of proceedings is optimistic.

Practically, EHRA, the undisputable leader in arrhythmias in Europe, could be now compared with Heart Rhythm Society in the USA, which has been active for many years and supported by large amounts of money.

Beyond a shadow of doubt, our society needs to map out new policies and strategies, find more money for its support and, most importantly, recruit the highest possible number of enthusiastic volunteers who will work for the society’s values and, above all, for patients with arrhythmias.

In this day and age, when Meritocracy is being largely replaced by Mediocracy and Idiotcracy, recruiting volunteers is not an easy task. Leaders should inspire. Leaders should undoubtedly express their ideas with passion so as to convince the majority. This needs to be a daily struggle for EHRA Board members and for all those who play a leading part in its hierarchy.

With the coming of the new year, major events are to be held :

All budget indicators have been already exceeded. The deadline for Abstracts submission is January 21st, 2011, and I am certain of your warm participation.

I wish you all the best for the year to come.

Friendly,

Professor Panos E. Vardas MD, PhD
President of the EHRA 2009-2011
