This study of the efficacy of a simple lifestyle intervention in primary practice shows that these interventions can be very effective and cost effective. The program proposed in primary prevention shows a lot of similarities with a classical cardiac rehabilitation program, but the prolonged group intervention is probably one of the succes factors.

It is well known that the positive effects of a rehabilitation program disappear in the months after ending it. A prolonged intervention such as pioneered by the Gospel trial had been shown to prolong the positive effects of the intervention.

So in primary as well as secondary prevention, life long interventions will probably need to be developed to reinforce the lifestyle changes obtained in an short term program.
