 The Council of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions of the European Society of Cardiology (CCNAP) and the Irish Nurses Cardiovascular Association (INCA) are collaborating to present the 9th Annual Spring Meeting on Cardiovascular Nursing, 2009 in Dublin, Ireland.
The theme of the conference is “Addressing the Challenges in Cardiovascular Care” and will take place from 24 - 25, April 2009.

Feedback from the 8th Annual Spring meeting on Cardiovascular Nursing, 14-15 March 2008
The 8th Annual Spring Meeting on Cardiovascular Nursing was held on 14-15 March 2008 at the Hilton Hotel in the centre of Malmö, Sweden.
110 abstracts were submitted for the event which attracted 290 Nursing Professionals. The Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions would like to thank all who participated to the success of the meeting.
Interview with Steen D. Kristensen, ESC Board Member
“I am indeed impressed by the quality of the scientific programme of the Spring Meeting.During the last one and a half years following the creation of the Council from being a Working Group, great developments are being made by CCNAP in 3 major areas:
- clinical practice
- science
- education of cardiovascular nurses.
 There is a big difference in nursing education throughout Europe and one of the major goals of the CCNAP will be to level standards of education throughout Europe. But the Council will take on this challenge with its forthcoming Education Committee.
At present most of the members of the Council are from countries where English is frequently used. A second major objective will be to involve countries where fluency in English is not so common – this will be an important hurdle.
And of course CCNAP will also be active in the implementation of the Heart Health Charter – a significant initiative in its scope and purpose. The ESC mission to reduce the burden of CV disease in Europe is a great challenge and we, as heart professionals, must work in concert to fulfil this. The role of Nurses and of Allied Professionals is clearly very important.”

Evolution of CCNAP
From the Working Group established in 1991 to the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions we know today, the nursing community in the ESC has grown into a highly organised group addressing issues in education and research. In parallel, CCNAP has become increasingly active in networking and in participating in specific initiatives initiated by other groups. Today it is the umbrella for all nursing professionals in ESC activities.
And from today?
CCNAP will strive to make a difference in patient care and be strong in research and education. What are the practical means to do this? By improving clinical practice, implementing guidelines, assessing practice and by developing aspects of the Spring Meeting: encouraging the submission of abstracts; awarding travel grants. Educational and scientific collaboration with both ESC and non-ESC groups will continue to grow.
A political approach for CCNAP?
 Professor Lars Rydén intervened at the Spring Meeting to give a brief history of the political approach to improving health throughout the European community. Illustrating the various stages in the political history of the ESC and its alliances with political groups and professional organisations, Professor Rydén demonstrated the importance of approaching political bodies with strong simple messages and a unified stance, gained by joining forces with other groups.
The ESC has received political support from the European community since 2006 culminating in the European Heart Health Charter, launched in Brussels in June 2007. The European Heart Health Charter focuses on both health and illness; on promoting healthy lifestyles and on improving clinical practice.
Professor Rydén encouraged CCNAP to help hospitals reach out to the public. He proposed incorporating lifestyle clinics in hospitals where nursing professionals could help modify the accelerating unhealthy trends in lifestyle. Professor Rydén recommended that nurses and allied professions embark on a sophisticated educational programme in lifestyles to include psychology and the understanding of today’s environment.
