Date :

07 Nov 2007

The Poster reception (Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science)

"The Poster reception (Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science) was extremely popular and at the ESC Congress 2007 it especially attracted the younger generation of basic scientists. The event gives them a taste of presenting their work to their peers and to leadership."

The Heart House based Councils Team share their post-congress impressions in this interview devised for the ESC Newsletter, November 2007 Edition.

Were the constituent bodies you look after broadly represented at ESC Congress 2007?
The events organised for Basic Scientists, Nurses and Cardiologists in Private Practice attracted high attendance.

Do you know the number of representatives that were registered to attend / who actually attended this year?
Members of the Council for Cardiology Practice, as well as Basic Scientists and Primary Care professionals are not identified in their professional categories at registration and cannot be tracked. In terms of the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions (CCNAP) the reduced fee payment for nurses brought 594 attendees (but not all nurses are actually part of the CCNAP).

How did you communicate about your activities prior to the congress?
Via "My ESC News", the "ESC corporate newsletter", targeted email campaigns to members, contact with National Societies of Nursing, CCNAP newsletter etc.

What were your key messages this year?
Council for Cardiology Practice – integration in the ESC with its first scientific session in the official congress programme.
The CCNAP brought opportunities for members to participate in initiatives.

Where were your constituent bodies particularly present/represented?
The CCNAP General Assembly attracted approximately 180 participants (good participation considering the population).
The "Take Home Message Session for Practitioners" (Council for Cardiology Practice) had an audience of more than 500.
The Poster Reception of the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science had 220-250 attendees.

The Poster Reception

What kept you particularly busy in the run up to the congress?
The organisation of the Poster reception whose pictures you can see both on this page and here...

What activities / initiatives (new or old) were the most successful in Vienna?
The Poster reception (Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science) was extremely popular and this year it especially attracted the younger generation of basic scientists. The event gives them a taste of presenting their work to their peers and to leadership.
Stéphane Potteaux, the Norman Alpert Visiting Scientist Awardee 2007, spoke briefly of her recent work and the opportunity open to her following the award - and this was a very tangible sign of the importance of the awards proposed by the Council.

Do you feel your constituent bodies visibility has been increased?
Yes for the visibility of the Council for Cardiology Practice thanks to the Congress Programme Committee accepting to include the “Take Home Message” in the official session. It benefited from the Congress Division’s publicity on its Scientific Sessions.

What immediate consequences on your activities will the Congress have? Any important decisions?
Yes a number of practical decisions have been taken such as:

 - The format of the General Assembly of the CCNAP may be modified or a discussion session may be requested to allow more exchange on certain topics.
- The "Take Home Message Session for Practitioners": the interest of practicing cardiologists was such that a request will be made to repeat this in 2008.
- The sustained interest in basic science by the next generation will no doubt influence decisions taken by the Council on Basic CV Science concerning forthcoming activities.
- The creation of the Council on Primary Care and the interest shown for the Take Home Message Session for Practitioners will give rise to specific initiatives for Primary Care professionals.

Will you share/feedback results obtained at the Congress to your constituent bodies?
Yes, via ESC newsletters, email campaigns, other newsletters...

What are your next immediate steps, any new projects or exciting initiatives you wish to talk about?
The Council on Primary Care created at the GA 2007 will be forming and activities / initiatives will be defined.
The Council for Cardiology Practice has always acted as a committee within the ESC although membership exists via national associations of practicing cardiologists. Communication to this membership will be enhanced.
