Theme, sessions and scientific content

What is this year’s congress theme?

The theme of this year's congress: prevention

As the major cause of mortality and morbidity, cardiovascular disease is a true 21st century pandemic. Prevention of cardiovascular disease involves an exceptionally wide range of researchers, clinicians and other specialists and has become one of the major focuses of the ESC. We have therefore chosen Prevention and Risk Factor Identification as the highlight of the ESC Congress 2009...

What are the different types of sessions and where do I find the latest sessions information?

The Scientific Programme has been prepared by the Congress Programme Committee in close collaboration with the ESC Working groups, Associations and ESC Councils.

More than 380 scientific sessions in the main areas of clinical interest will be presented either in the Pre-arranged Programme, in the Abstract Based Programme or in one of the Special Features sessions.

The pre-arranged programme sessions are available for viewing in the ADVANCE PROGRAMME 2009  which you can download or from the SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME ONLINE which can also help you create your personal itinerary thanks to the personal planner function.

Are there any new types of sessions I should know about?

Meet the Editors session: Come and discover the insights and the challenges! This session is dedicated to discussions relevent to editorial issues and it will be organised in cooperation with the Editors Club of the ESC.

Press and News Resources

Where will the press releases be posted during ESC Congress 2009?

All press releases will be available on a specific ESC Press Office section of the ESC Web Site, as soon as their embargo is lifted. Please respect embargoes at all times.

Where can I find the press releases on-site?

At the beginning of each official ESC Press Conference at the entrance of the ESC Press conference room. There are also shelves with all press releases in both Press Working Areas.

What are the embargos ?

An embargo is the time / date that members of the press can publish information on a study.  Embargos are very important and must be respected.

  1. For Hot Line sessions, the embargos are daily at the time of the press conference – therefore the embargo is on the same day as the presentation/press conference.
  2. For the rest of the press conferences, the embargo is the start time of the press conference.
  3. For the abstract/oral press releases, the embargo is at the time of the beginning of the related presentation.

Every press release has its embargo listed on the top.  No exceptions are made.
