Stent for Life Initiative

Targeting percutaneous cardiovascular interventions (PCI) at all who will benefit the most

Coronary Intervention

This initiative aims to improve the delivery of care and patient access to the life saving indications of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (p-PCI), thereby reducing mortality and morbidity in patients suffering from acute coronary syndromes (ACS).

17 member and affiliate countries and organisations are part of the growing Stent for Life Initiative whose aim is to drive for equal access to life-saving indication of PPCI in STEMI patients across Europe

The Stent for Life Initiative supports implementation of local ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treatment guidelines, helps identify specific barriers to implementation of guidelines and defines actions to make sure that majority of STEMI patients have access to the life saving indication of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) . Dr William Wijns, past-president of EAPCI, and SFL founder explains “The new European myocardial revascularization guidelines released recently reinforce the importance of achieving best clinical practice and reflect the growing evidence for the benefit of prompt intervention in all patients with STEMI”.

Stent for Life Forum 2014

The 3rd annual meeting of Stent for Life Initiative, the coalition of European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) and EuroPCR, was organized in Prague, Czech Republic from 27 February to 1 March 2014.

Leading interventional cardiologists, government representatives and industry partners from around the world met to share the experience in building effective primary percutaneous coronary interventions (PPCI) networks to reduce mortality and morbidity of patients suffering from acute coronary syndroms.

Results from the Stent for Life 2010/2011 Survey were reviewed during the SFL Forum 2014 plenary session on 28 February; current status of the reperfusion therapy in 37 ESC countries was discussed with a focus on six Stent for Life target countries: Bulgaria, France, Greece, Serbia, Spain, and Turkey.

Stent for Life Initiative became an inspiration for other geographies. Leading physicians from China, India and South Africa joined their European colleagues in a panel discussion and presented their experience and challenges while building STEMI programs in their countries.

Existing studies and evidence demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of PPCI for the treatment of acute coronary syndrom and in particular STEMI patients were reviewed by respected experts from Europe and the US during the morning workshop session on 1 March 2014.

New SFL projects were introduced and SFL best practice sharing session concluded the conference.
