European Reference Networks: an opportunity for the future of cardiology in EuropeEuropean Reference Networks (ERNs) bring together highly specialised healthcare providers from different Member States. They help provide affordable, high-quality and cost-effective healthcare to patients with conditions requiring a particular concentration of resources or expertise.Centre of Reference needs endorsement of a Member State. ERNs must demonstrate a common area of expertise and focus on highly specialised, complex or rare diseases. Eligibility criteria include an expected territorial coverage (at least 8 Member States) and at least 10 healthcare providers. There is no direct funding from European Commission to set up ERNs but other opportunities exist, through the Connecting European Facilities (CEF) programme for the eHealth dimension, Structural Funds (crossborder cooperation) and Social Funds (training & better skills).
