EACPR Board - Cardiac Rehabilitation Section Chairman

Miguel Mendes

Vision Statement l CV

“I see Cardiac Rehabilitation as the best available secondary prevention programme, with exercise as the cornerstone of a comprehensive intervention which includes an educational programme, risk factors control and the patient’s voluntarily adoption of a healthy lifestyle to be kept for lifetime.

This long-term approach, demands the scientific collaboration of several types of specialists, like cardiologists, rehabilitation doctors, psychiatrists, exercise physiologists, physiotherapists, physical education teachers, psychologists, dieticians and nurses, among others.

If I will be elected, during my 2 years mandate as Chair of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Section of the EACPR, I will be committed, together with all the others Section board members, to promote:

  • Investigation: so many gaps still remain in our knowledge regarding Cardiac Rehabilitation.
  • Recognition: Cardiac Rehabilitation is not yet recognised as a priority or an important intervention by many cardiologists and by Health Authorities in many European Countries.
  • The creation of a network of all the individual specialists and all the national organisations working in the CR field in Europe: we are so many, frequently not knowing each others work or difficulties.
  • The definition of the standards for certification of the CR centres and for the different specialists: it’s urgent to define the minimum requirements of a CR programme and of each of the specialists working in the field, which must be in a continuous process of self-education.

To fulfil these tasks, in a 2 years mandate, is surely a big challenge for me and for the team that will emerge from the election process. I will do my best effort to reach those very high demanding goals and I ask, in advance, for your advice and support!”
