Interview from Prof Martine Gilard, Education & Training Committee Co-Chair

ESC eLearning platform in interventional cardiology

Prof Martine GilardCan you please describe the aim of the ESCeL platform?

The mission is to ensure high quality of patient care by improving and harmonizing the training of interventional cardiologists in the European countries. The aim of the ESCeL platform is to develop necessary tools to standardize the process of education and integrate this process in the optimal Curriculum as defined by National and European Guidelines.

What are the advantages and benefits for National Cardiac Societies?

Firstly, it must be clear that there is no intention to take the place or minimize the role of National Cardiac Societies in the training process. The goal is simply to help different countries by providing a friendly platform with tools and services that may reduce the costs to National Cardiac Societies and may better harmonize training across Europe.

A high level textbook, the PCR-EAPCI Textbook, was edited with the help of leading international specialists and containing up-to-date references and links to e-learning (clinical cases and videos). An interactive E-log book will also help trainers and trainees to verify more easily the progression of training. It will help National Cardiac Societies to identify centres with difficulties in this process in order to solve the problems on time.

Once candidates are enrolled, what will be the role of the ESC and the EAPCI?

ESC and EAPCI will provide support for an easy and an updated process of training and certainly not a control of National Cardiac Societies education programs.
