The European Summit was one of several initiatives designed to support the practical and political implementation of the European Guidelines on CVD Prevention, as well as encourage the development of national multi-disciplinary Task Forces aimed at strengthening implementation activities

200 delegates from 46 countries and 27 health organisations were represented at the Summit aimed at “bridging the unacceptable gap between what is recommended and what is achieved in daily practice regarding the prevention of cardiovascular disease” as summarised by Professor Guy de Backer, Chair of the Joint European Societies CVD Prevention.

Michaël Hübel, Head of the Unit Health Determinants, DG Sanco of the European Commission, honoured us of his presence and gave the European perspective on cardiovascular health and how population strategies can be reinforced in all European countries through strong national alliances and the implementation of the European Guidelines on CVD Prevention and the Heart Health Charter adapted to socioeconomic and cultural conditions.

The European Summit was made possible through unrestricted educational grants from MSD and Schering-Plough, Pfizer and Sanofi-Aventis. The sponsors in no way influenced its scientific content.
