The Romanian Society of Cardiology launched a new Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Program last month in Bucharest, highlighting the crucial role of the alliance between medical societies and government representatives in the CVD Prevention Programme implementation.
More than 150 participants attended the event, including cardiovascular disease prevention experts and policy makers, cardiologists, opinion leaders, Presidents of National Societies (diabetology, nephrology, neurology, internal medicine, pneumology - tabacolocy, general practitioners) Ministry of Health Representatives, Romanian College of Physicians, Members of the Romanian Parliament and former ministers of health.
Special guests of the event were Europe’s CVD Prevention experts David Wood, EACPR President; Ian Graham, Chairman of the Joint Prevention Committee; Lars Rydén - Chairman of the ESC European Relations Sub-Committee for Prevention, as well as ESC representatives Sophie Squarta, Head of Department for CVD Prevention and Sophie O’Kelly, European Affairs Coordinator.
Professor Dan Gaita, (Pictured here with Dr Kulcsar and Mrs Squarta) National Coordinator for CVD Prevention for Romania stated:"The main three objectives, medically and politically speaking, are to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease acting on the modifiable risk factors: the first one is smoking cessation, the second one is optimal food choices and least but not last increase of daily physical activity"
Professor Mircea Cinteza, former Romanian Health Minister and Board Member of the Romanian National Cardiac Society mentioned the main measures adopted in these directions: the banning of smoking in public places and forbidding selling hyper-caloric food in schools.
HeartScore® Romania, an on-line CVD risk assessment and management tool in Romanian language was launched at this forum. The policy makers’ feedback was very prompt and positive: 10 days after the official presentation of the Prevention Program by Dan Deleanu, President of Romanian Society of Cardiology, the Romanian Health Minister announced the intention to start the risk evaluation in the population, based on the SCORE risk charts and the HeartScore® interactive programme.
The launch generated extensive media (TV and Press) coverage in Romania
