Welcome to the European Society of Cardiology. Our mission: to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in Europe

Calling all ESC Fellows: Your expertise is required!

We need your help in identifying the new and future leaders in cardiology...

Date: 10 Jun 2009

On the occasion of the survey conducted at the ESC Congress 2008, you expressed a desire to be more involved within the ESC, and we need your help in identifying the new and future leaders in cardiology.  You are the leading experts in cardiology.

 Fellows 2008

You were identified as such through the Fellows application process and therefore not only are you experts in your field but you are the cardiologists most qualified to identify scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and leadership ability in others.

“The idea is not to replace the existing leadership, but to identify the best way to attract new talented leaders and involve them in the political arena,” explained Professor  Steen Dalby Kristensen, FESC, ESC Vice President and Chairman of ESC Credentials Committee.

Prof. Dalby Kristensen, FESC, further expressed that these cardiologists need to be involved in Working Groups, Councils, Associations, and take roles as nucleus members, committee members, abstract reviewers, web editors, and chairs for scientific sessions.

This is a real chance for you as Fellows to be actively involved in shaping the society.
It seems that more often than not, the up and comers must find the will on their own to decide on application as a Fellow or getting involved with the society in other ways.

As the experts, we ask for you to take that first step and rather than waiting for future leaders to come to you, seek them out.

Identify them in your hospitals and National Societies and encourage them to get more involved in leadership roles. Professor Dalby Kristensen, FESC, reiterates how important this is, explaining that “We need to build upon future energies and ensure the ESC mission doesn’t lose its steam along the way.  This issue [is] crucial at both the European and national level….”

We can look to the Polish Society which has set a great example of initiative by having identified young, bright cardiologists who are now running their own meetings where the chair is granted a position on the Polish Society of Cardiology’s board.

Simply stated, we need more of this, in more places.

This theme was launched at the Spring Summit in March and will be discussed once again on the occasion of a specific meeting to be held during the ESC Congress 2009 with all the Presidents of the National Societies.

If you would like to get involved and help bring greater exposure and visibility to the FESC title, this is a great chance.  Please write to us with any other ideas you might have for identifying new leaders in cardiology and encouraging their involvement.
