EACVI scientific documents

List of recommendations and scientific documents released by EACVI

Publishing scientific papers and recommendations is a core activity for the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI).

While a patient-centric approach leads the association to publish multi-imaging recommendations, focus is also given to each modality governed by the EACVI.

EAE laboratory standards and accreditation

P. Nihoyannopoulos, Kevin Fox, Alan Fraser, Fausto Pinto

EJE (January 2007; 8): 80 - 87

Comment: Laboratory standards have been set by the European Association of Echocardiography of the European Society of Cardiology, in order to homogenize the practice of echocardiography in Europe and therefore ultimately, to protect patients. These standards have been developed for transthoracic, transesophageal and stress Echocardiography into two levels; the basic level, set to provide basic laboratory standards for an optimal clinical service and the advanced level, which is set to establish a fewer number of advanced laboratories in each country, where by in addition to basic standards, they may be providing extensive teaching and research.

Report on the European Association of Echocardiography Accreditations in Echocardiography: December 2003–September 2006

Kevin F. Fox, Bogdan A. Popescu, Sophie Janiszewski, P. Nihoyannopoulos, A.G. Fraser

EJE (January 2007; 8): 74 - 79

Comment: This report summarises the accreditation process, the details and the numbers of applicants and their progress through the Accreditation scheme. This report provides evidence that the EAE Accreditation schemes have been effective in establishing a standard for the echocardiographic practice and an accreditation that is effectively organised, reliable and robust.

Training and Accreditation in Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) in Europe

A position statement of the working group on CMR of the European Society of Cardiology

Ref:  January 2011 - Manuscript number: 10-00757 - ID: EHQ474

This document has aims to make proposals for a European standard for competency and excellence in CMR acquisition and reporting. This is to be achieved by providing recommendations for training of individuals wishing to perform and report CMR studies as well as for the accreditation of centres performing CMR studies and wishing to offer CMR training.

The document has been written in concordance with the ESC processes on accreditation and certification. However, it is emphasized that European certification of CMR competency or institutional accreditation in CMR as outlined in this document are not compulsory or regulatory certificates. An individual's right to report and sign clinical studies and an institution's right to provide a CMR service in individual countries remain defined by National laws and regulations.

These processes have been synchronized as much as possible with other recommendations for CMR training such as the Core Cardiology Curriculum of the ESC,1 those guidelines of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR),2 and the European Association of Echocardiography.3

The WG recognizes that physicians who have completed their specialty training and hold a licence to practice medicine face different constraints than trainees and it will often be impractical for them to spend prolonged periods away from their place of work. These recommendations therefore include alternative training options for licensed physicians.

Cardiovascular events remain one of the most frequent causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The majority of cardiac events occur in individuals without known coronary artery disease (CAD) and in low- to intermediate-risk subjects.

Brainstorm summary on hot topics

This summary reflects our brainstorm activities focused on the topic “…what we don’t know but should know…” in the field of cardiac imaging and cardiology in general.

On one hand we had stimulating talks as a basis for the following discussion parts. On the other hand we wanted to try a new platform for our exchange and our discussions: The “think – tanks”. In these think – tanks we worked and discussed in smaller groups (5-6 participants) and shared our ideas with respect to different topics.

The think – tank participants were randomly assigned to a group which were coached by experts in the field, allowing knowledge transfer from master to fellow and from fellow to master, allowing also discussions in an easy and stimulating
atmosphere.
