Protocol Summary

EUROASPIRE II is a 15-countries - Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK- multicentre survey of 8,181 medical records and 5,556 coronary patients undertaken in 1999/2000. It was the first survey in the new European Society of Cardiology "EURO HEART SURVEY" Programme. The overall aim of this second European survey is to describe the contemporary practice of preventive cardiology: namely how effectively are patients risk factors being managed in comparison to the goals for coronary prevention set out in the 1998 Joint European Societies Recommendations on Coronary Prevention in Clinical Practice.

Objectives of the survey:

  • The management of lifestyle and other risk factors – blood pressure and lipids – and the use of prophylactic drug therapies in secondary prevention of coronary heart disease.
  • Whether blood relatives of patients with premature CHD have been screened for coronary risk factors and how risk is being managed.
  • A comparison of standards of preventive cardiology between 1997 (EUROASPIRE I) and 1999/2000 (EUROASPIRE II).
  • The development of a coronary risk score for secondary prevention of coronary disease.
