Report from Chicago AHA 2010

CCNAP maintains a formal liaison with the American Heart Association (AHA) Council on Cardiovascular Nursing (CCN), with the Past-Chair of the Council serving as the liaison person.  As the current Past-Chair of the Council, Christi Deaton attended the CCN Leadership meeting during AHA Scientific Sessions 2010 in Chicago and provided an update on CCNAP.

The goals of this liaison are to increase our collaboration in:
  1. joint sessions at the ESC Congress, CCNAP Spring Meeting, and AHA Scientific Sessions;
  2. scientific and position papers;
  3. mentoring for new nurse researchers;
  4. global issues for cardiovascular nurses.

CCN supports their council chair to attend the ESC Congress as well.

The AHA Scientific Sessions are similar to the ESC Congress, although not quite as large a meeting.  At the Scientific Sessions 2010, CCNAP collaborated with CCN in a cardiovascular seminar on Cardiovascular Disease in Women.  Christi Deaton and Tone Norekval spoke at this seminar along with 2 speakers from the US and one from Canada.  If you attended the ESC Congress in Stockholm, you may recall that we collaborated with CCN to present a seminar on “Hidden Carers: the Importance of Family Members in Heart Disease”.

The two councils have many similarities, and there is much that we can learn from each other in supporting and advancing cardiovascular nursing, as well as combining our efforts globally.
