Improving the outcome of patient with acute cardiovascular diseases requires the expertise of the different sub-specialities in cardiology such as interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, electrocardiology, imaging….) but also of other medical specialties (emergency medicine, intensive care physicians….).
With the ambition to change the perception of the role of cardiologists in the management of acute cardiac care throughout Europe, and eventually the rest of the world, the Working Group on ACC is considering establishing a “body” of reference and authority in the field of ACS.
Such entity would also play a major role in guiding all European National Cardiac Societies in the need to have a common optimal standard and to deliver homogenous state of the art treatments to patients admitted to CCUs/ICCUS in Europe:
- Providing education and training to physicians and nurses on the best strategies of treatment
- Informing patients & professionals involved in ACC or its organization
- Influencing and advising healthcare professionals, Scientists, Decision-makers, Politicians, Media, Allied Societies in acute cardiac care.
The creation of an Association of Acute Cardiovascular Care of the ESC would ideally serve those goals. To fulfill all criteria required to become an association of the ESC, the Working Group on ACC has gradually but rapidly strengthen its positioning within the ESC:
- Definition of a new mission statement, objectives and goals corresponding to a boarder scope and wider audience
- A recently approved journal: EHJ-ACVC published by SAGE (First issue: April 2012)
- A successful ACC Congress moving to annual frequency from 2012 onwards
- A community of more than 800 Working Group members (as of February 2012)
- A solid financial balance
The Working Group also owns many other assets of scientific value for members
A formal application to become an Acute Cardiovascular Care Association of the ESC was submitted to the board late 2011 and is currently being reviewed. Final decision should be made after voting process at the ESC General Assembly during ESC Congress 2012 in Munich.
Working Group members will be informed in due time about the evolution of the Working Group.
