Preventive Cardiology at the ESC Congress 2011

Comment by Viviane Conraads, ESC Congress Programme Committee Coordinator

Date: 28 Jul 2011
“To salvage the acutely ischaemic myocardium without addressing the underlying causes of the disease is futile; we need to invest in prevention.”

This quote is taken from the Lancet paper published in 2009 (1), in which the evolution of lifestyle management in patients with established coronary artery disease throughout EUROASPIRE I to III is compared.

While all of us, working in the field of cardiology, experience the excitement of “high tech” developments, the need to improve preventive measures - both in Western and developing countries – remains compelling.

This year’s ESC congress, held in Paris, comprises a comprehensive set of symposia addressing the whole spectrum of preventive cardiovascular measures, from early risk development in children to specific subsets of patients, such as women and elderly.

In addition, novel developments in lipid management, as well as basic scientific developments are addressed.

Those of us, who have succeeded in adopting a sporty lifestyle and are advisors of amateur or even professional athletes, will surely enjoy the Sport Cardiology sessions and the Focus session entitled “Sport and the heart”.
