Let the barber shave your hypertension away

Comment from P. Marques Vidal, EACPR Prevention, Epidemiology and Population Science section.

Date: 11 Feb 2011
The authors conducted a cluster randomized study between 2006 and 2008 in 17 barber shops in Dallas, USA. The shops offered blood pressure checks with haircuts and promoted hypertension management and follow-up with specific health messages.

The intervention enabled an increase in adequate hypertension control from 33.8% to 53.7% in the intervention group, vs. an increase from 40 to 51% in the control group (P=0.03 after multivariate adjustment).

Enabling barbers to monitor blood pressure and promote hypertension management appears to have a beneficial effect in hypertension management.
